27 Oct 2013 - DIV 1 - Elementary as Holmes puts Players Lounge on way to victory - Left back Antony Holmes (right) opened the scoring as Players Lounge Athletic beat Cobden Vie to go third in the Division One table. His goal had an element of luck about it as his wind assisted deep cross sailed over the keepers head into the top corner. Soon after Danny Marcus curled his shot into the top corner to complete the scoring.

DIV 2 - Hare & Hounds go top and Crookes & District second, while Kangley double lifts Nook - Hare & Hounds went top of Division Two with a 2-1 victory at fellow promotion hopefuls Norton Oaks ‘B’. A push on George Rudd in the area allowed Jake Schofield to open the scoring for Hare & Hounds from the penalty spot in the first half and after the break Rudd doubled their lead after the break. Richard Brailey then handled in the area to five Norton a lifeline Jamie Marshall gratefully accepted from the spot, but despite another strong penalty appeal, Norton couldn’t force an equaliser.

Second are Crookes and District after their 4-0 victory at Sharrow Vale. Rob Acheson gave them the lead before a penalty award allowed Lee Wharton to cap his man of the match performance with a successful spot kick and an own goal saw Crookes three up at the break. It was more even in the second half, but Crookes confirmed their win with a fourth from Matt Cowen. Joe Kangley scored twice as Pen Nook climbed out of the bottom three with a 5-2 victory against FC Spartak. Rob Harwood, Ian Francis and Kangley goals had Nook in charge and although Jan Horvath pulled one back for Spartak, Ben Taylor scored Nook’s fourth before the break. Kangley added his second after the break before Horvath scored his second for the visitors. Jack Heffren scored from the spot to give Colley the lead at home against Chapeltown RBL. Colley’s lead was doubled by Faisal Miladi before the break and Jo Zipfel headed a third in the second half.

SENIOR SUNDAY CUP - Crofton Knagged out of it by Redmires, while Handsworth Old Boys thrash Dodworth MW - Dave Knaggs(left) scored a hat-trick as Redmires progressed to Round Four of the Taylor&Emmet Sunday Senior Cup with a 6-2 win at Crofton Colts. It took just thirty seconds for Knaggs to blast Redmires ahead from twenty five yards and although Croften briefly levelled the scores, Joe Keighley and James Kirkham strikes had Redmires 3-1 ahead at the break. The second half saw Knaggs seize on a mistake to increase Redmires’ lead before Crofton netted their second. There was to be no comeback though as Mikey Taylor finished off the games best move before Knaggs completed his hat-trick when he raced onto the impressive Steve Vale’s through ball to chip the keeper for Redmires’ sixth.

Handsworth Old Boys had an even more emphatic win at Dodworth MW as both Mario Esposito and Chris James (both pictured right) both scored twice as in a 6-0 win. Greg Burgin and Chisanga Nshindano added Handsworth’s others.  Also through is Bulls Head after their very solid 3-0 win at Westville. Liam Bonnick rounded the keeper before unselfishly squaring the ball for Greg Broomhead to give Bull the lead and it was doubled when Bonnick again rounded the keeper before slotting the ball home. It then needed Bull keeper Matt Coates to maintain their lead by making a point blank save from a header and another terrific save from a free kick. Bulls final goal came from the move of the match. Chris Peel received the ball out wide and he squared it to Matt Evans. He then slipped the ball to the overlapping Broomhead, who then squared the ball back to Peel to finish from the edge of the area.

Stannington Village also went through with a narrow 2-1 home win over Stainforth. Sean Flynn crossed to the back post for Gavin Davis to volley Stannington ahead and Rob Shelley doubled their lead from the edge of the area after twenty minutes. Stainforth did eventually pull one back and gave Stannington some uncomfortable moments but the home side held on.

Out though is The Vine after they lost a seven goal thriller at Kinsley Hotel. Craig Woolley, Liam allot and Rikki Davidson levelled three times after Kinsley had gone in front, but when their hosts scored a fourth with two minutes remaining there was no way back. The defeat made even worse when The Vine found that their dressing rooms had been broken into during the game. Although Danny Wattam almost gave Civil Service the lead at Mexborough’s Queens Hotel, service went out to two second half goals.

Woodhouse Angel also bit the dust against one of the favourites to win the Cup, Woolley MW. After Woolley had taken a two goal lead, Gareth Simons crossed for Matt Parkes to plant a bullet header past the keeper (pictured right), but the visitors restored their two goal lead before the break. Nick Hague started the second half by scoring Angel’s second with a wind assisted free kick from inside his own half (first left), but the Woolley strikers proved to much for the Angel defence and Woolley ran out 7-2 winners. More action from the game is below:

JUNIOR SUNDAY CUP - Hunter's knowhow at both ends helps Intake through – In the Taylor&Emmet Sunday Junior Cup, stand-in keeper Matt Hunter (left) saved a penalty before later coming out of goal and scoring Intake Old Boys’ final goal in their 5-0 win at Knowhow. Bobby Howard slid Intake’s first home before Ben Sargeant doubled their lead with a solo effort. Great play by Tom Hall allowed the overlapping Andrew Dodds to score Intake’s third before Hall’s ball over the top was finished by Tom Gabbitas. Hall was again instrumental in setting up a simple tap in for Hunter to complete the scoring.

Harry O'Neill kept his record of goals in every round with Fox & Hounds first in their 3-0 victory over Dalton Progressive WMC. Their others both came in the second half from Matt Jebson and Steve Davies. After John Mellor (right) had given Southey Social the lead on the stroke of half time at Hatfield Town they also went on to win 3-0. Simon Jebson beat a defender before hitting a low finish for their second, before Mellor grabbed his second. Reece McLandless also scored twice to put Old Blue Ball two up at Little Mester and although the home side drew level, Marc Peacock’s strike six minutes from time saw Ball through.

Justin Westoby set Oughtibridge WM on their way to a 5-2 victory over Darfield Club. Strachan Sampson doubled the lead before the visitors pulled on back before the break. The second half saw Oughtibridge take control with goals from Shaun Lee, Stephano Kissack’s header and Lee Smith’s strike from the edge of the area before Darfield netted their second consolation.

Another to hit five was The Pheasant as brothers Shane and Carl Andrews took their tally in the three rounds so far to twenty with three in a 5-1 victory over Carcroft Village WMC. Shane took his personal tally to eleven with the first two before Carl made it three after the break. An own goal made it four before Carcroft scored from the penalty spot, but The Pheasant had the final say with a Lewis Fothergill strike.

Piers Bond set Loxley on their way to a 3-1 victory at Sidings. Rich Dale doubled Loxley’s lead before the break, but it then needed some key saves from Lee Crabtree in the Loxley goal to keep his side in front before a bizarre own goal gave Loxley a gift. Crabtree was eventually beaten for the first time in the competition, but Loxley never looked like losing their lead. Despite two Nicky Shaw strikes and one from Joe Statham, Phoenix went out 5-3 at home to New Bohemians, while the league’s only other faller was Steelers, who lost 3-0 at Wath Tel-Star.

21 Oct 2013 - Sad news about one of the League's most successful captains - The League was saddened to hear about the death of one of the League's most successful captains, Bass Stones' skipper Greg Hobson. Greg was one of Bass Stones' leading figures as they dominated the League Cup in the 1990s, including the completion of the League and Cup double in our first final at Bramall Lane in 193-94 season. Greg was a very popular member of the squad and will be remembered for amongst other things always providing cheese and onion sandwiches at the end of training sessions. He was a very popular colleague wherever he worked and more latterly concentrated his sporting efforts on cycling. His larger than life character leaves a big hole in the life of all his family and friends and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Pictured right is Greg (centre) introducing the then Blades skipper Brian Gayle to his Bass Stones team mates at before the Bramall Lane Cup Final, and in the background is the late, former Leeds United, Juventus and Wales great John Charles.

20 Oct - CBC PREM - Leaders come unstuck in The Park, while Bulls Head undone by the Turf – While Ryan Campbell and Mark Townsend (left) doubles helped The Park inflict the first defeat of the season on leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels.

The Park started the game with more urgency, putting Stocksbridge under pressure from the kick off, with the visitors' only chance of note coming in the sixth minute when Mitchell Savage struck a thirty five yard free kick well over the bar. From the resulting goal kick Sam Kirk’s long clearance fell to Jack Ridge and he forced Stocksbridge keeper Stephan Marshall to save a low shot with his legs.

This early scare was a sign of worse to come for Stocksbridge and after nine minutes they conceded their first goal of the season away from home when good approach play saw Ryan Campbell nick the ball past the onrushing Marshall before squeezing his shot in at the near post from an acute angle. Stocksbridge quickly responded and had a chance to equalise a couple of minutes later when a slip by a defender gave Scott Birch sight of goal, but he volleyed over the bar.

The Park were really giving the leaders defence problems and had a penalty appeal for handball turned down. With Stocksbridge unable to keep possession they changed formation in an effort to get into the game and the change had a positive effect when they had the ball in the net, but Birch's effort was ruled out because a teammate was in an offside position in front of the keeper. The Park took full advantage of their luck to double their lead when Campbell skipped past two challenges on the right of the penalty area before again beating Marshall from an acute angle.

Stocksbridge responded and on the stroke of half time they deservedly got themselves back into the game when Mark Woodcock came in from the left to slide a pass into the path of Scott Birch who hit a neat left foot finish across The Park keeper Kirk into the bottom right hand corner.

Half Time The Park 2 Stocksbridge Park Steels 1

That goal just before the break gave the momentum to Stocksbridge in the opening minutes of the second half and they grabbed a deserved equaliser when Mitchell Savage made space for himself on the left to deliver a pin point cross which Birch could not fail to head home for his second goal of the game. Stocksbridge then almost took the lead when Jack Outhwaite's twenty five yard effort dipped inches over the bar with Kirk stranded.

Stung by that near miss, The Park took control of the game again and with twenty minutes remaining they went back in front when Callum Harrison gained possession in the middle of the park and sent Mark Townsend through to score with a low drive across Marshall into the corner of the net. Stocksbridge tried to get back into the game again, but it needed Christopher Robson to somehow clear a goal bound header off the line to stop them falling further behind.

It was a short stay of execution though as the resulting corner led to a scramble in the goalmouth and Adrian Tomlin tapped the ball home to double The Park’s lead. The home side really had their tails up now and Jack Ridge (right) made victory certain with a terrific solo goal, before some sloppy Stocksbridge defending allowed Townsend to pick up a loose ball before advancing to score The Park’s sixth.

The Park:

Sam Kirk, Ian Collins, Josh Ransom, James Galloway, Daniel Robinson, Jack Ridge, Adrian Tomlin, Alistair Mitchell, Ryan Campbell, Calvin Thomas, Mark Townsend, Substitutes: Callum Harrison, Adam Battle, David Hook, Adam Collins, Aaron Walker

Stocksbridge Park Steels:

Stephan Marshall, Thomas Nelson, Mark Woodcock, Michael Smith, Christopher Robson, Phillip Cookson, Jack Outhwaite, Mitchell Savage, Scott Birch, Joe Cloves, John McSeveney, Substitutes: Craig Barraclough, Tom Cadzow, Matt Jessermino, Charlie Stewart

Stannington Village closed the gap to just a point as Sean Flynn (left) scored twice in victory over Redmires. After a goalless first half, Lee Johnstone crossed for Flynn to head Stannington into the lead and when Dean Jepson chipped the ball into the goalmouth Jack Mylnek headed home Stannington’s second. Gavin Davis then set up Flynn to chip his second and although Nick Hickson pulled one back for Redmires they never looked like threatening the lead

Carl Eaton (right) and Tom Crosby doubles helped Handsworth Turf to a surprise win at Bulls Head. Eaton met a Crosby corner at the near post to put Turf ahead and only a good save by the Bull keeper stopped Ryan Foster extending it. Ty Wilson then missed a chance for Turf, but they did double their lead when Wilson’s long throw was met by a spectacular overhead kick by Eaton. Ryan Taff then raced clear of a static Bulls Head defence for Turf’s third before Crosby curled a free kick into the top corner. Crosby then struck his second from the edge of the area before Alan Mowforth grabbed a consolation for Bull

Chisanga Nshindano scored twice as Handsworth Old Boys thrashed local rivals Woodhouse Angel. Angel’s Gareth Simons hit the bar and Kirk Briddon missed a good chance before a Carter Mupwaya strike and a Mario Esposito penalty gave Handsworth a two goal half time lead. Angel’s cause hadn’t been helped when they were reduced to ten men, but they were again unlucky when Simons hit the woodwork a second time, but Phil Nshindano put the game beyond them when he scored Handsworth’s third before his brother Chisanga Nshindano struck his two goals late on.

Another to score two was Gavin Wills as Civil Service completed the double over The Vine with a 3-1 victory. Wills put Service ahead after just three minutes when Stacy Sharif’s shot was parried by The Vine’s stand-in keeper Sam Blackburn, but The Vine hit back and after Jon Warburton had gone close, Dan Simpson headed home Will Blakeney’s corner to level the scores. Service went back in front when Blackburn felled Sharif in the area and Wills drilled home the penalty. Service extended their lead after the break when Gareth Griffiths free kick fell for Ben Brown to volley home and although The Vine had a strong penalty appeal turned down, that was the nearest they came to getting back into the game.

Hemsworth Villa’s day started badly when their keeper’s car broke down on the way to the game and Ecclesfield Players Lounge took full advantage to open up a five goal lead. Scott Whittington (left) scored the first two before Craig Senior made it three (right). Tom Bartholomew made it four before Whittington completed his hat-trick. After the keeper turned up after the break Villa pulled one back when Peter Burgin got onto the end of Chris Waddle’s quick free kick and they grabbed a second when Sam Britton crossed for Simon Staniforth to head home, but Ecclesfield had the final say with a Paul Bashforth strike on a day when Scott Touhey made his three hundredth appearance for them. Further action from the game is below:

DIV 1 - Dan puts the skids under Brinsworth, while good Evans gets Aston back on track - Dan Skidmore scored the winner against Brinsworth Whitehill to give Cobden View their first win of the season. Cobden led at half time after Paul Griffiths had set Jamie Simpson up to chip the keeper, but after the break Lewis Watson scored to bring Brinsworth Level. Ross Johnson almost scored a second for Brinsworth when his free kick hit the post, but their stand-in keeper Reece Bridger had been the busier of the two keepers and he was finally beaten again when Simpson forced him into a hurried clearance that fell to Skidmore forty yards out and he played the ball back into the top corner for the winner.

Billy Evans (right) scored twice as Aston Swallownest got their promotion challenge back on track with victory over Loxley. Ross Edwards early goal for Aston was cancelled out by a Lee Crampton strike and although Evans put Aston back in front, the teams went in level at the break thanks to a Steve Mayfield goal for Loxley. Aston went back in front straight after the break when David Sills robbed a defender to set Evans up for his second. Sills extended their lead when he was first to the rebound when the Loxley keeper parried an Evans shot and Aston completed the scoring when Ryan Hall sent Lee Milburn down the wing to cross perfectly for Sills to head his second.

Although Rich Gilham volleyed Robbie Aspinall’s cross home to cancel out Steve Davies’s opener for Fox & Hounds, Norton Oaks missed the chance to go level on points with the leaders when they had to settle for a draw after Scott Stringers penalty was saved by Fox & Hounds stand in keeper Liam Boswell.

Old Blue Ball got their promotion bid back on track with a 4-0 home win over Anston Athletic. Christian Rowe scored from outside the area to gibe Ball a half time lead and Tom Thornton set up Callum Chambers for their second after the break. Marcus headed home Tom Goodison’s corner before Thornton capped his man of the match performance with a twenty five yarder into the top corner for Ball's fourth.

DIV 2 - Four each for Cowen and Howard spur Crookes and Intake to victory, while The Pheasant keep their perfect record – The Pheasant are still to concede a goal after keeping their perfect record  to re-take top spot off Hare & Hounds with a 3-0 victory over them. Carl Andrews beat a defender and cut in from the left to open the scoring before his brother Shane took advantage of a defensive mistake to double Pheasant’s lead before half time. Carl Andrews blotted his copybook when he blasted a penalty over the bar, but The Pheasant eventually scored a third after good work down the left by Dylan Parrott left Joe McKernan with a simple tap-in.

Up to second is Phoenix after they came from two down to win 7-3 at Chapeltown RBL. Although Josh Aston had given Phoenix the lead, they found themselves 3-1 behind after Ben Palmer’s thirty yard strike was followed by a Joe Moorhouse strike and a Ky Ugrader penalty. Phoenix levelled it up with two Nathan Darwent penalties and they went back in front with an Aston solo goal. Ross Brown then set Joe Howarth up to increase Phoenix’s lead and after Howarth had scored his second Darwent’s run and cross was perfect for Dan Commander to his phoenix’s seventh.

Up to fourth is Crookes & District after four Matt Cowen goals helped them to a 5-1 victory over Colley. Cowen’s first two had given Crookes a half time lead and he completed his hat-trick before Brendan Drew pulled on back for Colley. Cowen then restored Crookes’ three goal advantage before Luke Boast capped his impressive debut with Crookes’ fifth.

Norton Oaks ‘B’ have an identical record to Crookes after Jamie Marshall (left) scored a contender for the goal of the season in their 4-1 victory at FC Spartak. Nick West’s through ball allowed Adam Jackson to lob the Spartak keeper to give Norton the lead in a tight first half, but Norton took charge with three goals in the first ten minutes of the second half. Josh Stafford headed down for James Lockhart to volley home before Marshall danced round thtree defenders before hitting an unstoppable shot into the top corner from the edge of the area. Dom Jolly then squared the ball for Stafford to tap home Norton’s fourth and although Roman Pecha grabbed a deserved consolation for Spartak they never really threatened the Norton goal again.

Bobby Howard was another to net four goals as Intake Old Boys beat Pen Nook 6-2. Howard scored his first following a long throw by Billy Hawes before the games best move ended with Matt Hunter scoring Intake’s second from twenty five yards. Howard scored his second before Louis Axcell scored from the penalty spot after a handball in the area and Howard completed his hat-trick when he finished off Liam Parnell’s cross. After the break John Higgins set Howard up for his fourth and although sloppy play by Andy Dodds allowed Pen Nook to pull one back before a quick ball over the top and a quick one-two allowed Rob Shaw to net Nook’s second, the game was over as a contest.

Despite a brief equaliser by Tom Wray, a Kaiden Simpson double together with singles from Blake Owen and Sam Wright helped Steelers complete the double over Sharrow Vale with a 4-1 victory.

MACRON CUP - Sampson just too strong for Players Lounge – In the Macron Cup man of the match Strachan Sampson scored two and made one as Oughtibridge WM came from behind to beat fellow Division One side Players Lounge Athletic. Sampson gave Oughtibridge a first half lead with a free kick from an acute angle, but a great strike from Danny Clinton brought Lounge level before Clinton gave them the lead from the penalty spot. Stef Peat made a terrific save to keep Lounge in front but he could do nothing to stop Strachan scoring his second after Justin Westoby had turned their defence before pulling the ball back to him. Oughtibridge eventually got their winner when Strachan’s shot was saved by the keeper and James Baker scrambled home the rebound.

JUNIOR SUNDAY CUP - Brunt treble in vain as Guest wins it for Southey - Despite a Connor Brunt treble for Ranch, Southey Social twice came from behind to pip them to a place in Round Three of the Sunday Junior Cup. Brunt deflected shot after five minutes was the only goal of the first half, but soon after the break, Todd Guest and Lee Wilson goals had Southey in front. Brunt scored his second to take the tie into extra time and his third looked to have booked their place in the next round until John Mellor brought Southey level with less than three minutes remaining and Guest headed his second to win it for Southey who now travel to Hatfield Town in Round Three next Sunday.

13 Oct 2013 - CBC PREM - Davies double sees Steels go clear - Two Kevin Davies (left) free kicks helped Stocksbridge Park Steels defeat Handsworth Turf and go three points clear at the top. Scott Birch capitalised on a mistake in the Turf defence to give Steels a half time lead and soon after the break Davies thundered home the first of his free kicks. Birch then set up Mitchell Savage for Steels third before Davies struck home his second free kick. Turf had had their moments during the game and deservedly pulled one back when Ben Shackshaft headed home, before Ryan Taff scored their second to leave a final score of 4-2.

DIV 1 - Norton up to second after seeing off Aston - Norton Oaks 'A' are up to second in Division One after seeing off Aston Swallownest in an eight goal thriller. Billy Ireland headed Norton into the lead before right back Dale Kay rounded the keeper to double it before half time. After the break Ryan Hall reacted quickest to poke home to pull one back for Aston, but Danny Reet quickly restored Norton’s two goal advantage. An own goal reduced the deficit again, but man of the match Robbie Aspinall curled one into the top corner to put Norton in charge again before Rich Gilham drilled their fifth into the bottom corner. Billy Evans struck a third for Aston before the end but Norton held on without any further damage to their lead.

DIV 2 - Schofield strikes to send Hare & Hounds top - A single Jake Schofield (right) strike ten minutes from time saw Hare & Hounds defeat Chapeltown RBL and go top of Division Two, but he should have made it more comfortable as he later missed a penalty. Norton Oaks ‘B’ could have gone level on points with them if they had won at Pen Nook, but Nook keeper Joe Kangley helped his defence keep them out and the game finished goalless.

SENIOR SUNDAY CUP - Old Boys send The Park packing, while Green double helps Stannington see off Ecclesfield PL - Handsworth Old Boys are becoming cup specialists after they followed up their previous week’s Macron Cup victory over holders Stannington Village by twice coming from behind to defeat fellow CBC Premier side The Park in the Senior Sunday Cup. Aidy Tomlin gave The Park an early lead, but it was cancelled out before half time by Paul Turner. The second half started with The Park taking the lead a second time through Ian Collins, but Handsworth levelled again through Greg Burgin (left) and went through with goals from Chisanga Nshindano and Jack Hall.

A Bill Green double helped Stannington Village oust Ecclesfield Players Lounge 5-1. Jack Mylnek gave Stannington the lead before Green netted his first from John Alcock’s run and cross. Green then thundered home a free kick, before Mylnek set up Ben Shelley to add a fourth. Jake Woodhouse sidefooted home Stannington’s fifth, while Ecclesfield’s sole reply came from Ryan Keeney.

The Vine continued their good form with a 4-1 victory over Sporting Sheffield. Will Blakeney crossed for Matt Ellis to head The Vine in front and although their visitors briefly levelled, The Vine were back in front when Liam Allott beat three men to score. Shaun Blythe then set Rikki Davidson to add a third, before Allott netted his second from Ellis’s knock down.

Bulls Head went through with a 5-2 win at Market Inn. Liam Bonnick set Nick Ash up to open the scoring for Bulls Head, before Kerry Dixon tapped in a second from a corner. Dixon then back-headed his second from Alan Mowforth’s cross, before Bonnick’s run and cross allowed Greg Broomhead to make it four and man of the match Bonnick scored a deserved fifth.

Civil Service join them in the next round after twice coming from behind before winning a penalty shoot-out against Hackenthorpe ‘B’. After trailing at half time, Pole Romeo grabbed his first goal for Service to send the game into extra time, but it looked all over when Hackenthorpe re-took the lead. Service kept going though and in the final minute of extra time skipper Ben Brown grabbed a deserved equaliser to set up the penalty shoot-out. The first seven penalties were all scored, but stand-in keeper John Charles turned it Service’s way by saving Hackenthorpe’s fourth penalty and after Service scored their fourth, Hackenthorpe missed their fifth.

Hegel Noboussie and Mikey Taylor gave Redmires an early two goal lead at Jack in Box, and although their hosts levelled with goals just before and after half time, Redmires went through with further goals from Joe Keighley and Jon Wall. Our one team to go out was Hemsworth Villa who, despite goals from James Ireland (being congratulated after his twenty five yard screamer first left below) and Peter Burgin and the presence of their new signing Chris Waddle, went out 7-2 at Royal Earl. Chris is pictured right giving half time advice to his young team mate James House. More action from Villa's game is below.

JUNIOR SUNDAY CUP - Steelers shock for Players Lounge, while Andrews brothers lead goal glut - Carl Andrews (far right) with seven goals and his brother Shane Andrews (second right) with six helped The Pheasant lead the way as our clubs had a real goal fest in the Junior Sunday Cup. The Andrews brothers goals came as The Pheasant recorded a 21-0 victory over Angel Grenoside. Lewis Fothergill, Lee Gillott and Dylan Parrott all added doubles, while Andy Dawson and Sam Barker netted The Pheasant’s others.

Oughtibridge WM also reached double figures as Justin Westoby (far left) with four and Stephano Kissack with three helped them to a 12-1 victory at Royal Misfits. Matt Cundy with two and singles from Warren Walker, Joe Appleyard and Lee Smith completed the rout. Another to reach double figures was Loxley with an 11-0 win at FDL Totley. Jon Rhodes (second left) scored four along with doubles from Steve Mayfield and Anthony Marshall, while Joe Furey, Lee Crabtree and John Denton took Loxley’s tally to nineteen without reply in the two rounds played so far.

Danny Clinton also scored four for Division One Players Lounge Athletic, but they were all in vain as they were put out by Division Two Steelers. Kaiden Simpson and Blake Owen both scored twice as Steelers seemingly had a firm grip on the game at the interval, but Clinton started Athletic’s revival, yet further goals from Liam and Sam Wright meant Steelers finally ran out 6-4 winners. Despite a late strike by Colley’s man of the match Brendan Drew, fellow Blades Super Draw Division two side Phoenix went through with doubles from Jake Slaughter and Bradley Clarke and a Josh Aston strike.

Another all-Blades Super Draw tie saw Intake Old Boys come from behind to win record a thrilling 5-3 victory over fellow Division Two side Crookes & District. Mike Dobson gave Crookes the lead from a well worked corner routine, but Intake soon levelled when Bobby Howard finished off some neat build-up play. A quick break then saw Liam Parnell give Intake the lead, but it was cancelled out when Matt Cowen’s shot was allowed to slip under the keepers body. Intake went back in front when Shaun Garwell headed home Parnell’s free kick, but Crookes levelled again after the break when Chris Cottyn fired home a penalty. It was end to end at this stage, but it was Intake that went back in front a third time when Matt Hunter guided the ball home and they made certain when Daniel Nelson smashed the ball home from close range.

After Glen Greene and Richard Firth goals had put Fox & Hounds in charge at Jack n Box, Harry O’Neill’s sixth of the season from the penalty spot and an own goal saw Fox open up a four goal lead before their hosts pulled two back late on. Cobden View found themselves two down at half time at Shiregreen WMC and despite headers from Dan Skidmore and Mike Walker bringing Cobden level, they went out when Shiregreen netted their third five minutes from time.

An under strength Sharrow Vale also went out 5-0 at Sportsman New Boys, but one tie that wasn’t settled was the all-Blades Super Draw  clash between Southey Social and fellow Division One side Ranch. A Steve Batty goal had given Ranch the lead, but the game was stopped after Ranch striker Oliver Whittaker dislocated his knee and the game eventually had to be abandoned.

12 Oct 2013 - Some you win, some you lose - The good news is that Pen Nook have had a re-think and have decided to continue, but the bad news is that FC Spartak have had to call it a day. The Results Grid and the League Tables have been amended to re-instate the Pen Nook results and remove the FC Spartak results.

6 Oct 2013 - MACRON CUP - Super Mario too much for holders, while The Pheasant and Sharrow Vale cause upsets – One of the biggest shocks for a few seasons saw the Cup holders Stannington Village crash out at the first attempt as two Mario Esposito strikes helped Handsworth Old Boys beat them 4-2. Handsworth had been beaten 5-1 at Stannington in the league just a couple of weeks ago, but they looked determined to make sure there would be no repeat right from the start and super Mario took just four minutes to put Handsworth ahead.

Gavin Davis quickly brought the holders level, but with just twelve minutes gone Handsworth were back in front with a Joe Barrett strike. Stannington came out for the second half looking more determined, but they were rocked back on their heels when Esposito struck again to double Handsworth’s lead. Stannington responded with a Jack Mylnek goal after Davis had squared the ball to him and they tried to lay siege to the Handsworth goal, but the visitors were able to breath more easily after a quick break saw Dalton Kershaw strike their fourth.

Two more shocks came as two Division Two clubs put out Division One clubs. The first of them saw the League’s bottom club Sharrow Vale manage their first ever cup win, 4-3 over Anston Athletic. It didn’t look good when Anston took the lead with a William Hutchinson strike from the edge of the area, but just two minutes later Tom Wray rounded the keeper to bring Sharrow level. Sharrow took the lead in the second half when Paddy Young was brought down and Nick Hibbert scored from the spot and although a mistake by the Vale keeper allowed Daniel Richardson to pull Anston level, Hibbert restored Vale’s lead when the ball found him unmarked at the back post. Richardson netted his second to level things up a second time, but Sharrow finally won it when a loose ball in the Anston area was thumped home by Matt Jordan.

The second came as a Shane Andrews double helped The Pheasant come from behind to defeat Old Blue Ball 5-2. Marc Peacock beat the offside trap to put Ball ahead, but just before the break Andrews provided the perfect through ball for Craig Mahwood to hit The Pheasant’s equaliser. It became one-way traffic after the break as the Division Two leaders stepped up a gear. Carl Andrews put The Pheasant ahead from the penalty spot after he had been brought down in the area, before his brother Shane twice beat the keeper with low shots to put them 4-1 ahead. Man of the match Dylan Parrott added a fifth from the penalty spot after he had been brought down and although Tom Thornton headed a second for Ball it was just a consolation.

The day’s other all CBC Premier tie saw The Vine keep their fine form going as Matt Ellis and Liam Allott doubles gave them a 4-2 victory at Handsworth Turf. Allott put them ahead when he followed up after a Rikki Davidson shot had been blocked, but Turf levelled before half time when Ty Wilson beat two defenders before hitting a stunner from thirty yards. The Vine regained the lead in the second half when Ellis headed Will Blakeney’s cross home and they extended it when Andy Marsh laid the ball off for Allott to hit his second. Good work by Danny Leesley allowed Carl Bowler to head home and put Turf back in the hunt, but Ellis finished them off when Davidson crossed for him to score his second and The Vine’s fourth.

A third Division Two side to make progress was Phoenix after they came through a real thriller with fellow Division Two side Chapeltown RBL. A good move was finished off by Nicky Shaw to give Phoenix the lead and it looked as if it would be a comfortable win for them when Josh Aston added a second from close range, but Chapeltown had other ideas and two Ky Ugradar penalties together with a Jamie Wathen strike saw them take an unlikely lead. Phoenix pulled themselves together and Shaw’s second drew them level before sub Dan Commander grabbed a late winner for them.

Division Two Norton Oaks 'B' put up a great fight before going out to CBC Premier and last season's finalists Ecclesfield Players Lounge. Craig Senior netted twice as Ecclesfield took charge, but Norton pulled one back when Steve Reynalds met Ash Holland’s free kick. Dan Touhey restored Ecclesfield’s two goal lead, but Norton grabbed a second when Joe Lawson headed down for Dom Jolly to score. Scott Whittington’s cross allowed Senior to complete his hat-trick, but Norton had them hanging on after Chris Pigott grabbed a third for the Division Two side.

Division Two Hare & Hounds also put up a good showing against a Woodhouse Angel side currently second in the CBC Premier table. Angel took the lead when Hounds keeper James Lee flapped at a cross and Dave Kippax headed home, but they were pegged back by an Adam Cawood strike. Chris Towey volleyed home to restore Angel’s lead and there was no way back this time as Scott Riley added a third with a fine solo goal.

FC Spartak couldn’t contain former holders Civil Service and went out 4-1. Gavin Wills was brought down in the penalty area before picking himself up to score from the spot to give Service the lead and soon after the break he scored a second penalty after Wes Bamford had been upended. Stacy Sharif carved out the opening for Wills to complete his hat-trick and although Marek Ziga pulled one back for the visitors, Danny Wattam put the game to bed with Service’s fourth.

Intake Old Boys got off to the perfect start at Redmires when Bobby Howard fired them ahead, but that was as good as it got for them as Redmires blasted back with seven of their own. Dave Knaggs was brought down twice in the area and each time Jon Wall scored from the spot before Hegel Noubissie scored with his left foot. Knaggs played Scott Smith in for him to hit a left foot shot past the keeper before Wall completed his hat-trick. Mikey Taylor then struck Redmires’ sixth before Nick Hickson made the final score 7-1.

Just a single Division One side is currently through to the next round after Danny Willis, Liam Favell and David Conley strikes in the first half had seemingly put Brinsworth Whitehill in command against Division One rivals Cobden View. The second half was a different story though and two Jamie Simpson goals had Cobden right back in the game, but Brinsworth just managed to hold on.

Ranch gave CBC Premier title chasers Bulls Head a real scare before a Nick Ash wonder goal for Bulls Head put them through. Ranch had a first half lead in slightly bizarre fashion when Bull keeper Matt Coates’ poor clearance cannoned off the head of Ranch striker Richard Berry and flew into the net. Ranch looked like they might hold on until Sam Newton threaded a perfect through ball for Greg Broomhead to run on to and equalise. With extra time looming it looked as if only something special would separate the two sides and it came when Nick Ash was given the ball thirty yards out and after spotting the Ranch keeper was off his line he produced a sublime chip over him to settle a tie superbly refereed by Ken Nicholson.

Division One Loxley led at Hemsworth Villa with an Anthony Marshall free kick, but the CBC Premier side hit back to level before half time when Jack House tapped home after the Loxley keeper could only parry James Ireland’s shot. Villa took the lead in the second half when Ireland raced down the wing and crossed for Sam Britton to score and Britton showed his talent a second time to extend their lead after Pete Burgin put him through. Loxley made a spirited effort to get back into the game though and only two point blank James Dean saves prevented Marshall and Steve Mayfield from scoring for Loxley.

Fox & Hounds gave a good account of themselves at CBC Premier leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels, but the Division One side never really threatened to prevent their hosts from going through. With Jack Outhwaite lively throughout the game he combined with Mitchell Savage for Savage to cross for Scott Birch to put Steels ahead and although Craig Barraclough rattled the Fox bar it was Birch that completed a 2-0 victory after taking a pass from Chris Robson.

Ben Clark’s low right foot shot gave Division One Aston Swallownest the lead after just eight minutes against CBC Premier The Park, but good play by Calvin Thomas set up Mark Townsend for The Park’s equaliser just five minutes later. Although it stayed like that until half time, the second half was completely dominated by The Park. Ryan Campbell crossed for Thomas to put the visitors ahead before Campbell added a third and Townsend a fourth from the penalty spot after he had been upended in the box. A fifth came when Campbell converted Aidy Tomlin’s cross, before Adam Walker completed a 6-1 victory for The Park.

DIV 1 - Fletcher treble for the leaders slices Southey - A Tom Fletcher (right) treble helped Oughtibridge WM thrash Southey Social 6-0 and increase their lead at the top of Division One to five points. David Sheakey powerfully headed home Callum Hawley’s cross to put Oughtibridge in front before Fletcher netted his first to give them a two goal half time lead. A Justin Westoby solo effort made it three after the break before Fletcher became provider for Sean Lee to score. Fletcher made it five when he picked up a loose ball in the area before completing his hat-trick with a header.

DIV 2 - Simpson double as Steelers see off Colley, but Pen Nook fold - a Kaiden Simpson double helped Steelers to a 5-3 victory at Colley. Blake Owen gave Steelers the lead with his tenth goal of the season, but Wes Petch and Jo Zipfel strikes soon had Colley in front. Jack Cauldwell grabbed an equaliser for Steelers before the break and they took control in the second half with Simpson’s double and one from Josh Squires. Paul Smith volleyed a third for Colley late on, but they never looked like threatening the Steelers’ lead.

The division lost a team with the news that Pen Nook had called it a day after struggling to raise a team.
