Town stay on course, while Pitsmoor Hotel close in on top spot

Only two games survived the big freeze last weekend, but they saw Dronfield Town go joint second in the CBC Premier with victory over Royal Oak Pitsmoor, while Scott Spiers netted four times to help Pitsmoor Hotel maintain Division Two's only unbeaten record.

Donfield Town knew that had to win to keep the pressure on the two sides above them, but the made an edgy start and could easily have fallen behind had it not been for keeper Nick Siddons and some wasteful finishing by Oak.

It was still against the run of play when Town got their noses in front as Danny Gibbons found space in the Oak defence to fire home, but they weren't convincing and Oak were very unfortunate to go into the break a goal down.

Whatever John Burgin said to his side at half time, at first it appeared to have gone in one ear and out of the other as Oak continued to force the pace, but they again managed to weather the storm and Gibbons made Oak pay for yet more wastefull finishing when he doubled Town's lead.

Oak didn't give up though and Siddons again had to make saves to keep Town's lead and his efforts were rewarded when Nick Horsefield made the game safe with a third for Town.

Pitsmoor Hotel went into their game with Wadsley Bridge Travellers boasting Division Two's only unbeaten record and with the knowledge that if they win their games in hand on the sides above them they would go top and right from the start they seemed determined to do just that.

Pitsmoor were much quicker to master the difficult conditions and it didn't take long for Glynn Walker to fire them ahead, and with Lee Percival and a Scott Spiersdouble before half time, the game was as good as over by the interval.

Wadsley Bridge were doing their best to get back into the game, but there was no stopping Spiers as he added another two to rub salt into the visitors wounds to leavee the final score at 6-0 and Pitsmoor are now just four points behind the leaders with three games in hand.

9 out of 9 for George while West End go second as Stannington stumble

Although Redmires took a shock lead and gave the champions a real scare, Woodhouse George made it nine wins out of nine in the CBC Premier and after Stannington Village slumped to a shock defeat at Stocksbridge Par Steels 'A', the main challenge to George's title looks to be coming from local rivals Woodhouse West End after they hammered The Park 6-1.

Laycock Sports 100% record in Division One was brought to an end when they were held to a goalless draw by Civil Service, but second place Pen Nook was also held by Telecom Sports and Burgoyne Arms slipped to a shock defeat at Oughtibridge Village.

The Division Two lead changed hands again after Ecclesfield Travellers won at Lynthorpe Oak while Loxley lost at Hartley House who are now third. Capita Hartshead's win at Cutlers was a double history making moment for them as they kept a clean sheet for the first time and won five games in a row for the first time, while Pitsmoor Hotel maintained their unbeaten run with victory at Wadsley Bridge Travellers.

After a goalless first half Redmires must have thought they had a chance of bringing Woodhouse George's one hundred percent record to an end when Luke Siggs rifled a poor clearance by the George keeper straight back into the empty net.

That stung George into even greater efforts and an equaliser from Kirk Briddon was almost inevitable. More pressure produced what turned out to be the winner from Spencer Starkes, but not before Redmires pressure had them hanging on at the end.

Woodhouse West End also had to come from behind to get the win at The Park that saw them climb to second, but West End's win was much more comfortable. Danny Hooper soon had them level before a Dale Fuller strike put them ahead and the game was all over after a brilliant solo goal from Spencer Taylor and a volley from Damien Blakemore had them 4-1 in front at the interval. West End's victory was made even more emphatic as Taylor and Blakemore both grabbed a second goal each in the second half.

The surprise result was Stannington Village's defeat at a Stocksbridge Park Steels 'A' that had previously lost all it's home games. Adam Todd fired home the games only goal from an acute angle to leave Stannington's title bid in tatters.

Dronfield Town must have thought they would also slip up at Handsworth WMC when Dave Cawrey and Dean Franklin put the home side two up early on, but Rob Ireland and Adam Fordham had Town level by the break.

In the second half Town found themselves behind again when Dean Brown netted a third for Handsworth and had it not been for a string of great saves by Nick Siddons they would have been well out of the game and those saves became even more important when they claimed a win they scarcely deserved with two goals in the last three minutes from Ireland and Brett Gibbons.

Royal Oak Pitsmoor was another side cursing their luck after going down to defeat at home to Crookes Club. Dave Rowe netted goals in either half to give Crookes a two goal lead, but both were against the run of play and had it not been for the Crookes keeper it might have been Oak that had a two goal lead. Anthony Rodgers did finally beat him to reduce the arrears, but Oak couldn't force the second they deserved.

Laycock's lose 100% record, but Loxley also held and Burgoyne Lose

Division One leaders Laycock Sports were missing both their leading scorers when they travelled to Civil Service and although Andy Register did his best to fill in for them, they were quite their normal selves and their 100% record went as Service held on for a goalless draw.

They maintained their lead though as second place Pen Nook were also held by Telecom Sports. Nook even found themselves two down at the interval after Telecom's recent signing Adam Podmore had netted twice, but it turned out to be a game of two halves and after John Ward pulled one back, Ryan Cockayne produced a stunning finish to earn his side a point.

Burgoyne Arms would have settled for either of those results as they slumped to a shock defeat at Oughtibridge Village. Danny Hill hit the only goal of what tended to be an uncompromising affair.

Those results all gave Niagara the chance to make up some ground and they took the chance with both hands, winning 4-2 at Oxspring United. They were given a helping hand when Oxspring's Michael Furniss put past his own keeper, but there was no fluke about their others from James Shepherd, Tom Staniforth and Andy Lee and they made Steve Wood and Chris Hall goals no more than consolations for Oxspring.

Ecclesfield back on top as Loxley find themselves in a jam at Hartley

After losing the Division Two leadership the previous weekend, Ecclesfield Travellers grabbed it back again after their win at Lynthorpe Oak and Loxley's defeat at Hartley House. Kevin Wraith put Travellers ahead and Scott Johnson doubled their lead before half time and in the second half Craig Senior marked his debut with a double before Steve Fairbank and Craig Guilfoyle goals made the game look closer than it was.

Loxley went behind when Ryan Inkles netted for Hartley House and even though Craig Wells levelled before half time, after the interval they were always on the back foot. Darren Barkes netted on his debut to restore House's lead and further goals from James Todd and Jamie Grayson's spot kick were no more than they deserved.

That win moved Hartley House up to third after Woodseats Abbey went down to Jon Riley and Joe Sands goals goals for in-form Ball Boys, and another in-form side, Capita Hartshead produced two club records in their 4-0 win at Cutlers Arms.

Paul Gregory's double together with Tom Franklin and Nathan Stuart strikes saw Capita to a fifth consecutive win for the first time and it was also the first time they have kept a clean sheet.

Pitsmoor Hotel hold the division's only unbeaten record and it immediately came under threat when Richie Whitworth fired Wadsley Bridge Travellers into a first minute lead, but they didn't worry too long as a Gavin Davies volley had them level with the game less than two minutes old.

After that explosive start there were no more goals in the first half, but after the break Scott Spiers curled a real beauty into the top corner before John Senior tapped in an easy third for Pitsmoor.

After beating Tosalisana comfortably a couple of weeks earlier, Hollin Bush must have gone into the return half expecting to enhance their goal difference by quite a few again and although they netted seven times Tosalisana made a real game of it and Bush were just glad of the three points.

Kyle Kilham and Oliver Sayles both netted twice, while Bush's others came from Daniel Cooper, Lee Sweet and an own goal, but doubles for Nigel Kitani and Yanita Mosa together with an Ali Casa strike meant that Tosalisana were always in the game.

Sunday Junior Cup 4th Round

Laycock Sports spot on

The League Cup dominated this weekend's games but it was Laycock Sports who grabbed the headlines with a dramatic victory over Rawmarsh Earl Grey that saw them through to the last 16 of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Junior
Cup.
The match finished 3-3 after 90 minutes, with Ryan McWilliams bagging a hatrick. There were no further goals in extra time so the stage was set for goalkeeper Grant Parkin to grab the man of the match award with a superb save in the shoot out to see Sports through.

League Cup 3rd Round

Niagara Fall to Travellers

There were mixed fortunes for Jason Reeves who scored 2 before limping out of Ecclesfield Travellers 3-1 victory over Niagara. Reeves opened the scoring with a thumping header before Ricky Parsisson equalised for the visitors. Reeves added a second and Scott Johnson sealed victory when he fired home Travellers third.

Handsworth WMC eased their way into the 4th round with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Civil Service. The game was all but won by half time as WMC struck four times through Robert Pratt, Andrew Stevens and a David Cawrey double. Civil's only reply coming from Ian Stone. The second half was a quieter affair with Daniel Franklin scoring the only goal of the period to complete Handsworth's rout.

The defences ruled as Lynthorpe Oak & Woodseats Abbey fought out a 0-0 draw so it took penalties to sort this one out and it was Woodseats who emerged victorious with a 3-2 shoot out win.

2nd Division Ball Boys deserve credit as they fought hard against one of the leagues top sides, Hemsworth Villa. Villa had a lot of possession in the 1st half and went ahead when top scorer Ian Holmes beat Riley in the Ball Boys goal. Ball Boys rode their look though as Hopkinson struck the bar for Villa and the tide seemd to have turned for them as danger man Holmes pulled his hamstring after Hemsworth had used all their substitutes and with 30 minutes still to play. This inspired the Boys and it took some excellent defending by Villa's Ben Dronfield to keep them at bay. Villa's
10 men hung on though to see them through to the 4th round.

Redmires dominated the early exchanges against Stocksbridge PS 'A' and they were well worth the lead as Luke Siggs scored with a rare header from Gamblings pinpoint cross after 35 minutes. The Steelmen equalised just after half time though when Richard Gill fired home. Redmires continued to dominate but Steels always looked dangerous on the break so it was a relief when Simon Bradbury fired home the winner with a cross shot that beat the Steels keeper and sent Redmires through.

Under strength Royal Oak Pitsmoor went into this one with their centre half in goal and only 10 men as they faced Woodhouse West End. It was therefore no surprise when man of the match James Walters hit five and sub Sam Glaves grabbed another as the Westenders hit the hosts for six. There was disappointment as the tie of the round between Stannington and Dronfield fell foul of the weather.

CBC Premier

There was just one game in the CBC Premier Division and it was The Park who emerged victorious when they beat fellow strugglers Crookes Club by the odd goal in seven. Ryan Marshall, Adam Stringfellow, Edwin Colton and veteran Steve McMain struck for The Park with Liam Boswell and a Kevin Haigh double proving too little for the visitors.

Division One

In Division One Jordanthorpe Hotel leapfrogged Oughtibridge and moved nearer mid table security with an emphatic 5-1 away win. Scott Wostenholme, Daniel Waterfall & a debut goal from Daniel Barnes gave Hotel a commanding 3-0 half time lead. Further goals from David Goudge & Spencer Colton completed Hotel's scoring and Dave Hudson's strike was nothing more than a consolation for the hosts.

Stocksbridge PS 'B' were another side to record a hefty away victory as they defeated Oxspring United by 4-0. James Smith gave the Steelmen a 1-0 lead at half time but the floodgates opened in the second period when goals from Glen Chapman, Luke Burkinshaw & Phillip Cookson completed the rout.

Telecom's game against Lord Nelson was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Division 2

In Division 2 Half Moon eclipsed Hollin Bush and put a massive dent in their promotion hopes when they triumphed by 2-1. Chris Critchlow & Nathan Kingswood put Half Moon into a 2-0 lead at the interval and this proved enough as Hollin Bush could only muster a consolation goal from Kyle Kilham.

Culters Arms also failed to put any pressure on the sides above them as they crashed to a 3-2 defeat at Hartley House. James Todd & a Craig Senior brace saw the hosts race into a 3-0 lead but an Aaron Keenan double set up
a tense finish with Hartley House firmly on the back foot, however they held on to claim a narrow victory.

Loxley hammered lowly Tosalisana by 8-0. Carl Wells was the Loxley hero, grabbing 4 goals with Scott Parkin, Geoff Mayfield a Chris Whalley penalty and a superb Mick Smith free kick completing the scoring.

Capita Hartshead made it 4 wins a row, for the 1st time in the Club's history, with a thumping 5-1 win at Wadsley Bridge Travellers. Tom Franklin & Jim Linfoot grabbed 2 goals a piece and a Paul Gregory header completed Capita's scoring with Ritchie Whitworth firing home Wadsley's consolation. Capita fine performance was mirrored by Referee, Mr J Firth, who had an excellent game..
