DEC 06 / JAN 07

MOSBOROUGH ROYAL OAK

PRESENTED BY BRIAN LAWS manager of Sheff Wednesday

Receiving the award is Handsworth Old Boys' secretary Dave Wragg

Brian was part of Brian Clough’s special Forest side and he has obviously brought some of the Clough magic into management with him. First with Grimsby Town and then with Scunthorpe United, Brian has built good footballing sides capable of winning games and it’s these qualities that have been evident in his terrific start to his Owls career.

Although they made a slow start to their first season back in the League, the Old Boys have shown they are determined to win some honours as quickly as possible. At the start of November their young side caused a stir with a League Cup win over CBC Premier Redmires. They followed that with two wins and a draw against some of their main title rivals and they currently lie in second place on goal difference only.

PRESENTED BY BRIAN DEANE

Receiving the award are Russ & Craig Woolley of Mosborough Royal Oak

Brian had to be Dave Bassett’s finest signing and has since become a real Blades legend. He terrorised defences throughout the land at the highest level, was capped for England, and gone down in history as scorer of the Premiership’s first ever goal.

After starting life in the League slowly, Oak have now built a young team capable of challenging for honours. This season they were the League’s last survivors in the County FA Cups, reaching the Sunday Junior Cup quarter finals for the first time, and have reached the semi finals of the League Cup for the first time.

No stranger to the harsher side of football after spells in charge of Wolves and Walsall, Colin couldn’t have taken over the helm at Millwall at a more difficult time, but if anyone can help Millwall climb the table, it’s Colin.

Dronfield Town

PRESENTED BY DENNIS WISE manager of Millwall

Striker Luke Siggs, secretary Derek Siggs and skipper Des Pike receive the award

Part of the famous Wmbledon ‘Crazy Gang’, Dennis went on to star for Chelsea and England and, despite his 5’ 6” frame, he was a driving force from midfield – and still is, as his 5 goals and 9 bookings this season show. He has taken that same competitive edge into management, leading unsung Millwall to the FA Cup Final and into Europe.

One of the League’s oldest clubs, Redmires have had plenty of ‘downs’ over the years, but this season has seen them on the up. Their mixture of youth and experience has seen them secure the Division One runners-up spot, but their feat in becoming only the second Blades Super Draw Sunday Sports League side to ever reach a County FA Sunday Cup Final is arguably, an even bigger achievement.

PRESENTED BY MIKE NEWELL manager of Luton Town

Dronfield Town receive the award from Mike Newell at Luton's recent visit to Bramall Lane

After a distinguished playing career, the former Blackburn Rovers ace has quickly made his mark in management. After guiding the Hatters to promotion from League One last season, they are now at the front of the pack chasing the Blades in the Championship.

Dronfield have made their best ever start to a season, winning all four of their games – all of which were away from home – and they can now be considered genuine CBC Premier title contenders.

CROOKES CLUB

PRESENTED BY PAUL STURROCK manager of SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Manager Bill Fuller and secretary Alan Parkin receive the award

After success in Scotland, Paul proved it was no fluke by doing a magnificent job in reviving the fortunes of Plymouth Argyle and he has quickly shown at the Owls that he is a manager that knows what he wants and how to get it, and no one should bet against Wednesday clinching promotion this season.

Woodhouse West End has simply been unstoppable so far this season and have won every game they’ve played. It’s a long time since any club in the league has put such a consistent run together and it has seen them stand top of Division One and reach the quarter finals of both the League’s Dairy Farmers of Britain Milk Cup and County FA Sunday Junior Cup competitions.

PRESENTED BY PETER SHILTON (ENGLAND'S MOST CAPPED PLAYER)

Manager receives the award

Peter Shilton is quite simply a legend. England’s most capped international and the player with the most football league appearances, most notably with Leicester City and Nottingham Forest, he is recognised as one of world football’s greatest goalkeepers.

Crookes Club have been with the league for two season, gaining promotion in their first and looking well on their way to another in their second. They also contributed to success for Great Britain on the world stage, when earlier this season they entertained the Great Britain Deaf Squad as they warmed up for the Deaflympics, held in Australia. They gave the GB team a warm welcome and a real game, drawing 2-2 and with Crookes’ help the GB team went on to win the Gold Medal.

Stuart McCall played the game at the highest level with Everton, Rangers and Scotland, and was instrumental in helping Bradford City to promotion to the Premiership. Now Sheffield United are hoping that all his quality and experience will help The Blades achieve a similar feat.

After successive Division Two and One titles, Woodhouse George’s start to the season suggests there is a real chance they could make it three titles in a row. After winning the Merit Cup early in the season, October saw them score twenty six goals and included in their four wins was an 8-1 triumph over Meadowhall side Pack Horse Inn in the Senior Sunday Cup and a 10-2 CBC Premier victory at Moorview Ranges.

Stannington village

 PRESENTED BY DAVE BASSETT

Stannington Village secretary Granville Grayson receives the December 2001 Merit Award from Dave Bassett watched by Mark Goodwin of the Award's sponsors CBC Computer Sysytems

Dave Bassett may currently be manager of Leicester City, but he will forever be fondly  remembered by Blades fans. He beat the odds on so many occasions at Sheffield United and Wimbledon, that it is no surprise that struggling clubs will turn to him to try to work his miracles. Leicester City know that if anyone can get them out of their current plight at the foot of the Premiership, it’s Dave, and most genuine football fans will be willing him to do it.

Stannington Village joined the League this season after enjoying many successful seasons in the Hallamshire Sunday League. If some people didn’t already know what a good side they are, they have quickly woken everyone up to that fact. They are Division Two’s only unbeaten side and are hot favourites to land the Division Two title at their first attempt. They are also the only non-CBC Premier side remaining in the Fresh Co-op Milk Cup and have progressed to the quarter finals of the Sunday Junior Cup.
